First it was Dancing with the Stars. Then it was So You Think You Can Dance? Now, weve got Ballroom Boot Camp. In the United Kingdom and Europe, they show Strictly Come Dancing. Whats with all the dancing on TV?
People in general are taken with recreational pastimes these days. But, in addition to being somewhat challenging, they want their activities to be fun! Movies like Shall We Dance present an activity that is not only fun and challenging, but is done with a partner in a social setting. What more could you ask for?
A good partner would be one thing most people might like to have on the dance floor. Followers want a partner who can lead, and leaders like one who can follow. Perhaps a bit of rhythm, a few flashy moves, maybe even being able to do the dip?
In Shall We Dance we saw average people with average talent and ability take lessons and, over time, develop into fairly good dancers. In Dancing with the Stars we saw much the same thing, although the level of accomplishment was much greater.
Learning to dance is challenging and fun, but it doesnt happen overnight. It takes time to learn the steps, how to lead or follow them, the timing and body actions, and to develop the good habits that go into being a good dancer. Those skills and habits and all sorts of knowledge about dancing are gained through lessons and practice.
Anyone with average ability and some coordination can learn to dance. People with average ability and above average coordination (or vice versa) can usually learn to dance well. The really good dancers are not always those with extra talent or coordination: the really good dancers, by and large, are the ones that have more desire to learn. So they take lessons and practice, go out dancing, take lessons and practice, go out dancing ...
Not only do people need lessons, they also - naturally! - need knowledgeable, skilled and qualified teachers. At The Dance Place, we offer training for folk who are interested in becoming teachers. Our next courses will start in January, one on Saturdays and one on Mondays. For details on these courses, please contact Phillip Stephens on 713-248-2299 or email him at PhilTex44@aol.com
The Dance Place also offers a wide range of class lessons plus one-on-one training in sessions known as private lessons.
