Dancing With (or without) The Stars
The third season of the extremely popular program called Dancing with the Stars will air on Tuesday, September 12, from 7-9pm CST. This program is an offshoot of the United Kingdom show titled Strictly Come Dancing which has been very popular in Europe for several years now. The popularity of "Dancing with the Stars" has lead to other programs such as So You Think You Can Dance? and Ballroom Boot Camp, and other similar programming like "So You Think You Have Talent?" and "Skating with the Stars." We folk in the Ballroom & Latin dance business are VERY happy to see all this dancing on TV!
People in general are taken with recreational pastimes these days. In addition to being somewhat challenging, they want their activities to be fun! Shows like "Dancing with the Stars" and movies like Shall We Dance present an activity that is not only fun and challenging, but is done with a partner in a social setting. What more could you ask for?
A good partner is something most people would like to have on the dance floor. Followers like a partner who can lead, and leaders like one who can follow. Perhaps a bit of rhythm, a few flashy moves, maybe even "the dip"?
In Shall We Dance we saw average people with average talent and ability take lessons and, over time, develop into fairly good dancers. In Dancing with the Stars we saw much the same thing, although the level of accomplishment was much greater. Just remember: you don't really have to be a star to get out there and enjoy dancing!
Learning to dance is challenging and fun, but it doesnt happen overnight. It takes time to learn the steps, how to lead or follow them, the timing, body actions and other moves, not to mention developing the good habits that go into being a good dancer. Those skills and habits and all sorts of knowledge about dancing are gained through lessons and practice.
The Dance Place offers a wide range of group classes plus one-on-one training in sessions known as private lessons. Right now is a great time to start lessons so youll be ready for all those holiday parties and other social functions that often feature dancing! For information about the private lessons, give us a call at 713-266-0066.
Not only do people need lessons, they also need knowledgeable, skilled and qualified teachers. At The Dance Place, we offer training to folk who are interested in becoming teachers. The courses start at various times during the year with some on Saturdays and others on Mondays. For details on these courses, please contact Phillip Stephens on 713-248-2299 or email him via phillip@theplace2dance.com.
