1985 - 2010: 25 Years of Dancing Excellence
On Saturday, December 19, 2009, The Dance Place presented its 25th Annual Holiday Show. The studio was decorated beautifully thanks to some of our extremely supportive and selfless students and teachers who all pitched in to create just the right atmospher. In all, 41 fabulous routines were presented to a house packed with over 240 guests. The show got underway at 7:30pm and ran smoothly until its conclusion at a few minutes of 10:00pm, at which time we started serving food in the buffet line.
This was really a very special evening for The Dance Place, and it was extremely rewarding to perform in front of such a receptive audience. There were several "first time" performers, several who had been in a few shows, and some who were "seasoned veterans". Some performers, such as Sharon (Shelton) Pease (Bolero & Cha-cha with Phillip Stephens) and Yvonne Kubicek (Foxtrot & Viennese Waltz with Michael Schedler), have been in a large number of shows at The Dance Place. Carole Pasternack and teacher Tony Carbonell are another "veteran" couple. Returning to the floor after a 9-year hiatus from dance was Elaine Scott (Foxtrot) with teacher Phillip Stephens.
We were thrilled that Milana Pliner participated with students Oscar Medrano (Rumba) and Larry Case (Cha-cha), and that her students Hank Nguyen and Kelly Duong also danced. Viorel Balan performed a nifty Cha-cha with Maria Nguyen. Nadia Hayes and A.B. Miller performed an Argentine Tango choreographed by Tony Carbonell.
Lance Estridge performed with Lillian Kaye (Foxtrot) and Lydia Gresham (Tango), Charles Stokle performed Waltz with Versie Cuthbert and Waltz with Rebecca Fuller, Julianne D'Amico performed with both Tyler Perkins and Pierce Walters in several dynamic numbers, and our youngest performers were Allison Colvard and Max Gurevich, who performed a Cha-cha/Jive medley. Rabih Timani performed Rumba and Foxtrot with Janet Carpenter and Bolero and Cha-cha with Marilyn Westheimer, and Susan Timani performed a Rumba with Roger Mitzel.
Bonnie and Doug Stockwell - videographer and photographer respectively - took to the floor to dance a lovely Waltz and Bonnie returned later to dance a Foxtrot with Ronnie Leverett. Karen Leiker danced a super West Coast Swing with Michael Stephens, Jeanine Stuart danced a "fab" Foxtrot with Eddie Stutts, Cami and Irsan Tisnabudi danced a rather interesting and interpretive Samba and returned later to perform a Jive to "Santa Baby" costumed as Santa and his helper.
We were very pleased to have Annette Farrell Klein's Smoothdancer Ballroom Studio participate in our show this year. Katarina Tomasic and Alex Hansen dance a Waltz Solo and then later joined Lynne McCarthy & Patrick Moran, Lindsey Holton & Harold Klein, Madonna Pool & Geno Callens, Takane & Larry Walls and Karen & Dave Matuszewski in a Quickstep formation to Mack the Knife.
Ruby and Ron Weston entertained us with a hot Salsa to I Got Rhythm, Jenny Shen and James Wallace performed a beautiful Waltz to Amor E Musica, Traci Bourque-Johannson performed to You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch with a Green-haired Orlando Martinez and Vickie Dunn performed a swing with Phillip Stephens.
We want to thank Houston for supporting The Dance Place for the past 25 years and we hope you will continue that support for years to come!
